I was very pleased to pass the exam in October 2021 to receive my NBC-HWC designation. This credential is based on extensive research and training and holds the profession to the highest standards. This credential is also touted as allowing the profession to become more recognized and respected.
So, many of you are thinking: “What is this acronym?” “What does it stand for?” You might even be thinking, “Why should I care.”
The National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) credential was established in 2016. It is a collaboration between the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching and the National Board of Medical Examiners. The intent of this credential is to provide verification that a health and wellness coach has achieved the highest standard and is well prepared to offer high quality services.
Health and wellness coaching as a profession has been growing in leaps and bounds in the past several years. Numerous training programs have been created to prepare coaches for this critical role in the healthcare system. There is even currently an effort to allow for health and wellness coaching to be a billable service reimbursable by insurance.
What does it take to become a health and wellness coach? How do you choose a program? What are the benefits of becoming a NBC-HWC coach? What are some tips for people who wish to gain this credential? I’m so glad that you asked!
